A Welcome and a Mission Statement
By J. Andrew Zalucky
In our age there is no such thing as “keeping out of politics.” All issues are political issues, and politics itself is a mass of lies, evasions, folly, hatred and schizophrenia.
-George Orwell, Politics and the English Language. 1946
Many people claim that they prefer to “stay out of politics.” They all have their reasons, some understandable, some ridiculous. Some people don’t have the time and energy to get engaged. Perhaps they didn’t grow up in a family where the parents were active in politics. Others like to go around saying things like “oh, who cares, my vote doesn’t count anyway”, or “politics is just another way for the man to keep me down.” (I’ve never really been sure about who “the man” is myself) These statements tend to explain themselves.
And of course, there are those who say “I hate politics, it’s just so mean and divisive!” But is that really an argument against politics?
The writers here at For the Sake of Argument disagree. Indeed, politics is harsh, complicated, and contentious. For us, this is what makes it so interesting. But this is not just about being “deep” or “profound”. The discussion about issues and ideas, principles and pragmatism, and society as a whole is one of the most important conversations we can have. If it wasn’t so important, there would be nothing to get so “divisive” about. More to the point, this is why we like to write about it.
With that said, we know that within the realm of political writing, there is a place for nuance and a general level of respect for your opponent. While repelled by the euphemistic and relativist tendencies of one side, we also abhor the mind-destroying hyperbole of the other. With this site just in its beginnings, it has no official ideological position, but I’m sure one will evolve over time. This does not mean that we will shirk the need to take a position on a given issue. Rather than set our own trap by telling you our beliefs, we think its better that we show you what they are through our writing.
So to break decorum just for a moment, thank you for visiting! I hope you enjoy reading our stuff! Whether you’re really into politics and want to check out some thoughtful and opinionated writing on the subject, or you’re just out there in search of a new and independent voice, I hope this site has what you’re looking for.
